Former Steelers CB Cam Sutton’s attorneys issue statement after his release from jail
Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK

The attorneys of former NFL cornerback Cam Sutton released a statement Monday following his release from a Tampa, Florida, jail.

“On March 31, 2024, Mr. Cameron Sutton voluntarily turned himself into the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sutton’s attorneys, Todd Foster and Jason A. Setchen, via Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report. “On April 1, 2024, he was released on his own recognizance. After completing an investigation into this matter, the Office of the State Attorney has elected to file a single misdemeanor. Both Mr. Sutton and the mother of his children request privacy in this matter, as they view this as a family matter and wish to resolve it as a family.”

Sutton, 29, had turned himself into the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday after being wanted for aggravated battery domestic violence. Police first issued a warrant for his arrest on March 7. A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office bulletin post noted that Sutton was taken in at 8:24 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Sutton allegedly assaulted a woman in Lutz, Florida. Sutton was said to be driving a Jeep Grand Wagoner with Florida license plate AZ33QB. At the time, authorities encouraged anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to get in touch.

After appearing in court Monday, Sutton was charged with one misdemeanor count of domestic battery.

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man has finally made the right choice to turn himself in,” sheriff Chad Chronister said in a press release. “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to heal from this man’s gruesome actions.”

Lions release Cam Sutton

The Detroit Lions, whom Sutton spent the 2023 season with, released him one day after a warrant was issued for his arrest. He started all 17 games, tallying a career-high 65 tackles (50 solo), four tackles for loss, one interception and six passes defended. Sutton spent the previous six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected him in the third-round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee.

He appeared in 84 games (39 starts) for Pittsburgh. Sutton compiled 168 tackles (143 solo), eight tackles for loss, eight interceptions and 38 passes defended. Sutton signed a three-year, $33 million deal with $22.5 million guaranteed with the Lions last offseason.
