There’s plenty of excitement ahead on Day 2 of the 2024 ATP Tiriac Open in Bucharest, Romania. 17-year-old prodigy Joao Fonseca received a wildcard for this event and will take on Lorenzo Sonego, while three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka takes on 7th seed Nuno Borges. Who do you think will come out on top? We also look at the rest of the day’s matches in a separate article.

ATP Bucharest Day 2 Predictions

Lorenzo Sonego vs Joao Fonseca

Head-to-head: First meeting

Joao Fonseca is receiving plenty of opportunities of late, but who else to direct them at rather than probably the biggest under-18 prospect in the world right now? That said, the Brazilian still has a lot to learn. The ball-striking talent is absurd and he’s very hard to stop on a peak day already. But his performances aren’t too consistent and he’s likely to struggle against a player of Lorenzo Sonego’s quality. Good experience anyway and maybe if the weapons are firing…
Prediction: Sonego in 2

Valentin Vacherot vs Marton Fucsovics

Head-to-head: First meeting

The results that Valentin Vacherot is getting this year can set him up for a potential Top 100 debut later this year, but for now the Monegasque star needs to start bringing it on the main tour as well. He went through the qualifying draw without much of an issue, but definitely could have landed an easier opponent here. Marton Fucsovics is a fierce competitor that will likely be ready for him and the in-form Vacherot will need to play one of the best matches of his career to win.
Prediction: Fucsovics in 3

Nuno Borges vs Stan Wawrinka

Head-to-head: First meeting

Stan Wawrinka is 2-6 for the season and while it feels like his standard of play has been a little better than that, it’s becoming a problem that he’s simply not getting the wins. This isn’t the worst opportunity to get something going, but it’s not like Nuno Borges is very beatable at the moment. The Portuguese will have no problem with making it physical and while he still hasn’t made long-term ATP Tour impact, he seems to be getting closer to that level.
Prediction: Borges in 3
